About Sally

I didn’t know there was a writer inside me when I was growing up in Denver. I liked reading books, but I was more of a tree-climbing, bike-riding, dirt-digging kind of girl with a big imagination. I should have suspected something in school when I noticed I was the only one in my classes that got excited about writing assignments, especially lengthy research papers.
After graduating from the University of Missouri, I taught elementary school until my son and daughter were born. I loved being a mother, but needed something more in my life. I took a writing course from the Institute of Children’s Literature and the writer in me finally emerged. Success came slowly, beginning with short stories published in Teen, Highlights for Children, Jack and Jill, and several other magazines. My love of research led me to nonfiction, beginning with several articles in Cricket. Finally, Franklin Watts accepted my first book, Donor Banks, then followed it with assignments to write five more. Assignment to do books for other publishers followed. I am now up to 51 published books and hope the number will keep growing.
To keep improving as a writer I keep active in the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI), attend conferences, take occasional courses, and get together with other writers in my critique group. When not writing, I love to travel with my husband, read, and work crossword puzzles. But my biggest joy is spending time with my five grandchildren, three of which are triplets.
