I'm like Peter Pan - I never want to grow up. That's why I love writing for children. It allows me to keep one foot in a child's world without having people talk about me behind my back.
I have written mostly nonfiction because I love the "treasure hunt" aspect of doing research. But creating fictional characters and situations is also fun. (Just don't let anyone tell you that your characters will do everything you want them to. They have minds of their own, just like your own children.)
